Our professional installers will remove any carpeting and base boards, install the plywood subfloor, plastic and felt paper and nail down the new 3/4 inch solid hardwood flooring. The floor will then be filled, hand scraped or sanded followed by a custom staining and 2 to 3 coats of polyurethane.
Glue downs are installed by trowel spreading of adhesive on the subfloor in a pre-determined area shown in the picture. If removal of pre-existing flooring is required, H/S offers you that service also. Usually professionals will measure out three feet or enough for twelve rows to cover, using a three inch wide board as an example. Each and every individual board is placed (one at a time) on the adhesive until the glued area is covered. Once completed, another area is marked and laid and the flooring continues until completion.
Sand and Finish
Hardwood floor refinishing begins with sanding down to the bare wood removing scratches, dents, and of course the old stain and finish. Now comes the fun of selecting your own personal favorite stain color from our vast selection. H/S Architectural Surfaces has a collection of stain choices specifically mixed for your design tastes. You can even request a special blend of stain just for your hardwood floors.
The last step is choosing a finish sheen of polyurethane protection for your new floor. Just like paint has a gloss, matt or high-gloss finish, so does the top layer of clear finish to protect your hardwood floors and make them shine. Most wood floors up to 1,000 square feet can be fully refinished in about 3-4 days.
Hand Scraped Hardwood Floors
Hand scraped wood floors are nothing new. In fact, American wood flooring craftsmen in the mid 1800’s used a scraping tool to level out unevenness between planks long before modern electric tools such as the belt sander were available. Along the way, someone discovered that the artful application of the scraping tool could be used to create a unique hand-made, rustic texture.
How does Holz & Stein Architectural Surfaces create the hand scraped texture? The same way they did it back then. A unique process is created with special scraping tools, however, the skill of the technician is what creates the one-of-a-kind texture. It takes years of supervised, devoted experience to learn the art and develop a “feel” for the scraping technique. But the scraping is only one part of the total process. The finishing procedure of staining, sealing, screening, and recoating the wood floors all contribute to the totally custom look of worn wood with deep color and subtle highlights.
Recoating the floor is recommended when superficial scratches are present for maintenance purposes. Holz & Stein will buff the floor with a fine grit sanding screen to remove the fine scratches and to prepare the surface for the new coat of finish. When recoating a floor two important things have to be determined. First, what is the type of wood cleaner used by the home owner and secondly, what type of finish was applied last time and how long ago? If determined that oily products like Murphy’s oil was used, then the floor has to be treated and cleaned before buffing, otherwise the new finish will not adhere to the surface and it will peel off in a matter of 1 year or less. The type of finish is important only if the floor was coated less than two years ago. If less than 2 years have passed from the last application, then the same product must be used, otherwise a reaction between the new coat and the existing coat will damage the floor finish.
Please also note, when we have earned your business and upon our arrival to begin any of the services selected, all furniture, rugs, etc. must be previously removed from the flooring area. If you are unable to move furniture yourself, don’t fret. Holz and Stein has an optional service that can accommodate both removal and replacement of all furniture and accessories both residential and commercial quickly and economically.
